The higher level you get as a dancer, the more injuries you have to fight through. “But the one thing that’s applicable is the discipline of a dancer. “We’ve spent hundreds of hours trying to get some of that dance training out of her,” he said. Gunnarson said there is a downside to Allman’s dance training - mainly the tendency to want to point her toes in any movement. So she has to do all the things she can do very well.” … We tailored her throw to her strengths. She threw 100 feet, 2 inches as a freshman, and Brian Gunnarson took over as the Silver Creek throws coach. The first time she threw it, it came out of the back of her hand, spinning counterclockwise - instead of the correct release off the index finger and clockwise. Overcoming that, she trained at Dance Dimensions in Longmont, did the traveling with Pulse, and later discovered the discus. “I grew too much for my body, and there wasn’t enough blood to support the bones,” she said. During her sixth-grade year, though, she spent six months on crutches. Valarie was in the fifth grade when the family arrived in Colorado, and she immediately fell in love with the area. Noticing their client base was moving westward, they decided to follow suit and chose Longmont. But she has channeled much of her energy into the discus.Īt 6 feet tall and 155 pounds, there still is the natural tendency to watch her throw for the first time and marvel: Where did that come from?Īllman was raised in Hershey, Pa., where her parents, David and Lisa, had a small consulting firm, Knowledge-Advantage. She smiled and added, “It honestly was the incentive of food that was my initial motivation to throw the discus, which is very sad, but it’s the truth.”Īllman has continued to dance when she can find the time, including in hip-hop and contemporary at Streetside Studios “Two of the girls said, ‘Val, just come throw for a day and you can come to our dinner.’ I said: ‘Know what? I’m all about the spaghetti.’ So I tried the discus and found I had a very strange knack for it.” “The throwers had a spaghetti dinner every year, and they were getting ready to have it,” Allman said. “Then one day she came to me and said, ‘Can I go try the discus?’ ” Keith recalled. So, in the spring of her freshman year, she gave in to the pleas of her older brother, Kevin, a pole vaulter, and Silver Creek track coach Barbara Keith, and came out for track as a sprinter and a jumper. Although she had returned to dance the following year, the injury made her ponder branching out to conventional sports, in part to make her feel more a part of the school community. Seemingly on the way to prominence, and perhaps even a career as a dancer, Allman got sidetracked when she suffered a dislocated kneecap as an eighth-grader. Then, on Sunday, we’d pack up and I’d be back in school on Monday.”
“We’d perform in front of the groups and work with the choreographers, and then we’d put on a showcase show every Saturday night. “We’d help set up the venue and do guest registration, and then we’d work during the classes and help the students with the choreography,” said the Stanford-bound Allman. As a selected “Pulse Protégé” member of the company with an extensive background as a multidiscipline dancer, she hopped on a plane each Friday for seminars and shows in cities such as San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Atlantic City, N.J.
